Green papaya salad is a classic Thai dish and also the most popular dish among people in Thailand. It can be found practically everywhere in Thailand, even in school canteens. In Bangkok, you can even see vendors pounding the ingredients in a clay mortar on the floor, with their baskets full of ingredients. Yes, that's right - no fancy kiosks, only a simple hard ground for their pounding needs is all these vendors need. It is a Northeastern food that is eaten with sticky rice. Read more ...
There are two types of green papaya salad and they consists of either dried shrimp or salted crab. Green papaya salad with dried shrimp and peanuts is called "som tum thai". While the green papaya salad with salted crab is called "som tum pbooh". The majority of the ingredients are the same. Many foreigners prefer Som Tum Thai because there is no pungent smell from the fermented salted crab which can really smell & taste yacky if you are not used to fermented seafood.
In Thailand, green papaya salad is made using a clay mortar, wooden pestle and a spatula. The ingredients are basically being pounded in the mortar. This is a great healthy dish with lots of fiber too ! A must try dish if you are in Thailand. In Singapore, Little Thailand located at Beach Road (Golden Mile Complex) has many stalls operated by Thais selling authentic green papaya salad. The taste has not been changed to adapt to the Singaporeans' tastebuds.
Ruins of St Paul's Macau Macau
The Ruins of St. Paul's refer to the facade of what was originally the Church of Mater Dei built in 1602 – 1640, destroyed by fire in 1835 and the ruins of St. Paul's College, which stood adjacent to the Church. As a whole, the old Church of Mater Dei, St Paul's College and Mount Fortress were all Jesuit constructions and formed what can be perceived as the "Acropolis" of Macau. Close by, the archaeological remains of the old college of St. Paul stand witness to what was the first western-style university in the Far East, with an elaborate academic programme. Nowadays, the facade of the Ruins of St.Paul's functions symbolically as an altar to the city. There are many buses that go to this famous "symbol of Macau". Get a map that has the bus guide from the tourism counters at Barrier Gate / Airport (level 1) / etc… Touring by bus is perhaps one of the cheapest mode of sightseeing & you won't get lost. Many sourvenir shops can be found at the foot of the Ruins of St Paul's. This is also a MUST visit tourist destination in Macau.
