Hotels in Taipei are very expensive. For the budget travelers, we decided to stay at this hotel. This is a hotel operating under the alias of a hostel. Not to be confused with the International Taipei Youth Hostel (located on ZhongXiao road level 13).

Better than many 3 star hotels in Taipei, YMCA rooms are good & clean. Bathroom was extremely clean, bathtub small but not a speck of dirt in sight and the shower worked like a charm. There are tea, water, towels, shampoo, toothbrushes, shaves and soaps. There are private safes located at the front desk. The beds are hard & the pillows leave a bit of a kink in your neck. There was a heating and air conditioning control in the room.

A small fridge is provided but there is no mini bar. Very good for storing lots of drinks & food during our stay. A hot water machine is located in front of the elevators – very convenient for cup noodles ! There are no hot water jugs in the rooms.

There is free internet for guests to use for 10mins. The YMCA has its own restaurant next door and there is a Family Mart directly across the street for those of you who wish to stock up your little fridge in your rooms.

Cleaning staff are super lovely. They may not speak English but a smile is always encouraging and this they provided in abundance. The front desk staff speaks English but hardly ever smiled. Still they are always there to lend a helping hand & they’re pretty good at finding out information for you.

The YMCA is right across the street from Taipei Main Station and also the bus station which has buses to both airports every 15mins. The first bus leaves at 5am. The buses go to all parts of the country so if you have time, totally take advantage of the buses to some of the countryside (the scenery is absolutely breathtaking).

The hostel is located on XuChang Street (pronounced “Soo Chang”) right behind the Shingong tower. If you take exit 8 (Gongyuan Street) from the MRT station you’ll come out near a 7/11 which looks directly across the intersection of Gongyuan and XuChang. Follow XuChang Street down for about 15 seconds and YMCA awaits you. To stay here for the night in a private room with an ensuite costs around US$55.

All the taxi drivers know where the YMCA is. The roads are almost impossible to navigate. The streets are cut up into sections and numbers. The front desk has a little card which says in Chinese “Please drive me to the YMCA.”This also states the address and the section you’re in. Present this to your taxi driver if you manage to make it to the hotel without any guide book / map.

Be warned, street signs are subject to change. Some maps may have it written as HsuChang, ShuChang or HsiuChang…

I think the YMCA is so much better than many Taipei 3 stars hotels in terms of value for money, services & room facilities. I will definitely stay here again.

This hotel is about 10-15 minute walk to the MRT station. Several parks nearby, as well as a night market, bank with ATM, post office, and 7-Eleven, all of which we happily took advantage of.

The mini fridge still had some space for us to store our food & drinks, although mostly taken up by minibar items.

Internet access available in the lobby for guests to use, which worked fine. Staff at the front desk are very helpful & friendly.

Good value for money hotel !
